This photo won the prestigious Smithsonian Magazine's 7th Annual International Photo Contest's Americana Category in 2010. The image was featured in the Smithsonian Magazine, on the Smithsonian website, and in a TV special about how the editors select the winning images.
The photo was taken on June 12, 2009 at Newfound Gap Overlook in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The eight Mennonite women in this photo happened to be on a tour of the Smoky Mountains and made a brief stop at this overlook at the same moment that our group of seven hikers arrived at the overlook to begin an overnight hike to Mont LeConte. The image was captued within a 10 second window of opportunity with a point and shoot camera while all eight women were lined up on the wall.
